BSC Young Boys are back in the Champions League group stages; will they leave their mark?

In 2018, they won their first Swiss Super League title for 32 years but have since won four-in-a-row, finishing 31 points clear last season.

This time around, Young Boys are currently third but hammered early league-leaders FC Zürich 4-0 on Saturday; Michel Aebischer with a brace.

This recent domestic domination has given them the platform to make an impact in Europe.

They made their only previous Champions League group stage appearance in 2018 when, coincidentally, they faced Manchester United.

Man United won both meetings, 3-0 and 1-0, but Young Boys did enjoy a famous victory over Juventus, all be it they ultimately finished bottom.

As well as this, the Swiss side have qualified for seven Europa League group stages, all since 2010, including in each of the last three campaigns.

They last failed to qualify for a group phase of any kind in 2015.

This year, David Wagner’s team came through three rounds of qualifying just to get this far.

First, they beat ŠK Slovan Bratislava and CFR Cluj, drawing away and then winning at home both times.

In the play-off round, Young Boys got past Hungarian champions Ferencváros.

The first leg in Bern finished 3-2, despite the fact Silvan Hefti was sent off after 25 minutes, before winning again by the same scoreline a week later in Budapest.

Thus, just being here is an achievement but the Swiss champions will be desperate to make some sort of impact in the Champions League.

However, with Atalanta and Europa League winners Villarreal also in Group F, they are favourites to finish fourth.

Will it be a famous night at Stadion Wankdorf?

As for Manchester United, everyone is just talking about one man right now.

On Saturday, for the first time since the 2009 Champions League Final, Cristiano Ronaldo took to the field in a Manchester United shirt.

Of course, he stole the show, opening the scoring in first half stoppage time before restoring Man United’s lead just moments after Newcastle had equalised.

Not to be outdone by his compatriot, a Bruno Fernandes rocket made it 3-1 before substitute Jesse Lingard secured an emphatic win.

Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side are now top of the Premier League having beaten Leeds and Wolves and been held to a draw by Southampton.

Last year, the Red Devils were beaten in the Europa League Final by Villarreal so are still without silverware since winning that competition in 2017.

But, the expectation this time is that Man United will challenge for the very biggest trophies, ambitions that are only heightened by Ronaldo’s return.

However, since last reaching the final in 2011, they’ve won just two of five Champions League knockout ties.

Those wins came against Olympiacos in 2014 and Paris Saint-Germain on that famous night in 2019.

That cannot be changed here but they need to ensure they get past the group stages, unlike last season.

Solskjær’s team did beat PSG in Paris a year ago but away defeats to İstanbul Başakşehir and RB Leipzig saw them slip down to third.

Almost exactly three years after their last visit to Bern, will Manchester United easily beat Young Boys again?

One of David Wagner’s greatest moments as Huddersfield Town manager was a 2-1 win over Manchester United shortly after their promotion to the Premier League.

Will the German enjoy something similar here?

David von Ballmoos kept goal when Manchester United visited Bern in 2018 and will do so once again here.

At the back, club captain Fabian Lustenberger is out due to an achilles tendon rupture suffered in April.

Right-back Silvan Hefti is back though after being suspended for the second leg against Ferencváros in the play-off round.

Midfielder Alex Jankewitz, who joined the club this summer, will be hoping for a happier encounter with Manchester United.

In his one and only Premier League appearance, for Southampton in February, the teenager was sent off after 88 seconds and his team then lost 9-0.

He’s unlikely to start though with Michel Aebischer getting the nod over Vincent Sierro, alongside Christopher Martins.

The danger man is Christian Fassnacht so keep an eye out for him, probably on the left wing.

Up front, Meschak Elia and Jordan Pefok will line-up as a front two.

The latter has now won eight caps for the United States, scoring a stoppage time winner in the CONCACAF Nations League semis in June.

Will Young Boys beat one of Europe’s best?

As for Manchester United, with West Ham to come on Sunday, Ole Gunnar Solskjær may be tempted to rotate, even if only a little bit.

In goal though, David de Gea is likely to keep his place with Dean Henderson injured.

At the back, Raphaël Varane and Harry Maguire are firmly first-choice so it’ll be interesting to see if either Eric Bailly or Victor Lindelöf are given a run-out.

In midfield, Fred was rested at the weekend, after his international exertions, but is likely to return at Nemanja Matić’s expense, alongside Paul Pogba.

Scott McTominay is still injured but should be back soon.

Further forward is where the Red Devils have a plethora of options.

Bruno Fernandes, flanked by Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood, started on Saturday and appear to be the first-choice trio.

But, they also have Donny van de Beek, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, who scored at the weekend, Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani.

That’s without mentioning Marcus Rashford who’s out after shoulder surgery.

If anyone is likely to come into the XI, it’ll surely Lingard who also scored twice for England earlier this month.

Only one man will lead the line though.

In Cristiano Ronaldo’s club career, he’s now scored 676 goals in total, 134 of which have come in the Champions League.

He’s previously scored against FC Zürich and FC Basel but will be looking to score against this Swiss opposition for the first time.

Will the five-times Ballon d’Or winner fire his side to a victory in Bern?
