Course, titre et angoisse: Meghan et Harry expliquent la rupture royale à Oprah
LOS ANGELES – Dans une vaste interview diffusée dimanche, Harry et Meghan ont décrit des discussions douloureuses sur la couleur de la peau de leur fils, la perte de la protection royale et les pressions intenses qui ont conduit la duchesse de Sussex à envisager le suicide.
L’entretien avec Oprah Winfrey était le premier du couple depuis leur démission de leurs fonctions royales et le spécial de deux heures comprenait de nombreuses révélations susceptibles de se répercuter des deux côtés de l’Atlantique.
Harry a dit à Winfrey qu’il se sentait piégé par la vie royale et était surpris d’avoir été coupé financièrement et d’avoir perdu sa sécurité l’année dernière. Il a également déclaré qu’il estimait que sa famille ne soutenait pas Meghan, qui reconnaissait sa naïveté à propos de la vie royale avant d’épouser Harry, alors qu’elle avait subi des attaques de tabloïd et de fausses histoires.
Meghan, qui est biraciale, a décrit que lorsqu’elle était enceinte de son fils Archie pour la première fois, il y avait «des inquiétudes et des conversations sur la couleur de sa peau à sa naissance». La déclaration a conduit Winfrey à demander «Quoi», incrédule et à s’asseoir en silence pendant un moment.
Dans un rare moment positif de l’interview, Harry et Meghan ont révélé que leur deuxième serait une fille. L’interview s’est ouverte avec Winfrey jaillissant de la grossesse de Meghan et déplorant que les protocoles COVID-19 les empêchent de s’étreindre.
L’interview a eu lieu aux États-Unis une journée entière avant d’être diffusée en Grande-Bretagne. Les révélations ne sont pas terminées: Winfrey a taquiné des parties supplémentaires de l’interview qui seraient diffusées lundi matin sur CBS.
En réponse à une question de Winfrey, Harry a déclaré qu’il n’aurait pas quitté la vie royale sans sa femme, l’acteur anciennement connu sous le nom de Meghan Markle qui a joué dans le drame télévisé «Suits». Il a déclaré que leur relation révélait les restrictions de la vie royale.
« Je n’aurais pas pu, parce que j’étais moi-même piégé, » dit Harry. «Je n’ai pas vu de sortie.
« J’étais piégé, mais je ne savais pas que j’étais piégé, » dit Harry, avant d’ajouter: « Mon père et mon frère, ils sont piégés. »
Harry a reconnu qu’il n’avait actuellement pas de relation étroite avec son frère William, héritier du trône après leur père, le prince Charles.
Harry a contesté les rumeurs selon lesquelles il aurait intentionnellement aveuglé sa grand-mère, la reine Elizabeth II, avec sa décision de se séparer. Il soupçonne que les rumeurs venaient de l’institution.
«Je n’ai jamais aveuglé ma grand-mère», dit-il. «J’ai trop de respect pour elle.
Meghan a également été élogieuse envers la reine, bien qu’elle ait dit à un moment donné qu’elle avait réalisé que certains dans le palais étaient prêts à mentir pour «protéger les autres membres de la famille».
«La reine a toujours été merveilleuse pour moi», a déclaré Meghan.
Winfrey à divers moments de l’interview a fait la une des journaux sur Meghan et à un moment donné, a posé des questions sur l’impact sur la santé mentale. Meghan a répondu qu’elle avait eu des pensées suicidaires et avait demandé de l’aide auprès du service des ressources humaines du palais, mais on lui a dit qu’il n’y avait rien à faire.
Meghan a déclaré qu’elle s’inquiétait du fait que son fils n’ait pas de titre royal car cela signifiait qu’il ne serait pas assuré de sécurité.
Meghan a déclaré que tout digérer pendant la grossesse était «très difficile». Plus que le titre de «prince», elle était la plus préoccupée par la sécurité et la protection de son fils.
«Il doit être en sécurité», se souvient Meghan aux yeux larmoyants. «Nous ne disons pas de ne pas faire de lui un prince ou une princesse, quoi que ce soit. Mais si vous dites que le titre va affecter leur protection, nous n’avons pas créé cette machine monstre autour de nous en termes d’appât à cliquer et de fourrage tabloïd. Vous avez permis que cela se produise, ce qui signifie que notre fils doit être en sécurité. «
Meghan a déclaré qu’il lui était difficile de comprendre pourquoi la famille royale s’inquiétait de la couleur de la peau de son fils. Elle a dit qu’il lui était difficile de «compartimenter» ces conversations.
Harry a également déclaré qu’il y avait des impacts durables sur le traitement de Meghan et sa relation avec sa famille.
«Il y a beaucoup à travailler là-bas,» dit Harry à propos de sa relation avec son père. «Je me sens vraiment déçu. Il a vécu quelque chose de similaire. Il sait à quoi ressemble la douleur. Et Archie est son petit-fils. Je l’aimerai toujours, mais il y a eu beaucoup de mal. »

L’entretien spécial de dimanche s’est ouvert avec Meghan, décrivant à quel point elle était naïve à propos des règles de base de la vie royale avant d’épouser son mari, Harry, il y a près de trois ans. «Je n’ai pas bien compris ce qu’était le travail», dit-elle. Elle a également noté qu’elle ne savait pas comment faire la révérence avant de rencontrer la reine Elizabeth II pour la première fois et qu’elle n’avait pas réalisé que ce serait nécessaire.
« Je dirai que j’y suis allé naïvement parce que je n’ai pas grandi en sachant grand-chose sur la famille royale », a déclaré Meghan. «Ce n’était pas quelque chose qui faisait partie de la conversation à la maison. Ce n’est pas quelque chose que nous avons suivi.
Meghan a déclaré qu’elle et Harry étaient alignés pendant leur fréquentation en raison de leur travail «axé sur la cause». Mais elle n’a pas pleinement compris la pression d’être liée à la prestigieuse famille royale.
«Il est facile d’en avoir une image si éloignée de la réalité», a-t-elle déclaré. «Et c’est ce qui était vraiment délicat ces dernières années, c’est quand la perception et la réalité sont deux choses très différentes. Et vous êtes jugé sur la perception, mais vous en vivez la réalité. Il y a un désalignement complet et il n’y a aucun moyen de l’expliquer aux gens.
Le couple s’est marié au château de Windsor en mai 2018 et leur fils, Archie, est né un an plus tard.
En haut de l’interview, Winfrey a déclaré qu’aucun sujet n’était interdit et que Meghan et Harry n’étaient pas payés pour le spécial.
Les interviews royales qui ne sont pas liées à un sujet spécifique sont rares, et les sessions télévisées antérieures se sont souvent révélées problématiques. L’interview du prince Andrew à la BBC en 2019 sur ses liens avec le délinquant sexuel condamné Jeffrey Epstein a conduit à son propre départ de ses fonctions royales après avoir omis de faire preuve d’empathie pour les victimes d’Epstein.
Le départ de Harry et Meghan des fonctions royales a commencé en mars 2020 à cause de ce qu’ils ont décrit comme les intrusions et les attitudes racistes des médias britanniques à l’égard de la duchesse.
En Grande-Bretagne, l’entretien est considéré comme mal chronométré. Il sera diffusé pendant que le grand-père de Harry, le prince Philip, âgé de 99 ans, reste hospitalisé à Londres après avoir subi une intervention cardiaque.
