Ravens’ touchdown reduces the Chiefs lead

Lamar Jackson scored on a two-yard touchdown run to reduce the Chiefs lead down to four points after an uncharacteristic mistake from Patrick Mahomes opened the door for Baltimore to get back in the game.

Jackson now has 77 yards rushing in addition to his 223 yards passing.

The Ravens failed to convert the two-point conversion after their initial successful two-point conversion was called back due to an illegal man downfield penalty.

Here’s the Xs and Os of that Kelce catch and run.

That Kelce TD was great

There’s a lot of groan-worthy hyperbole with Travis Kelce — especially in fantasy circles — but that TD run was pretty incredible. He broke tackles, beat guys, had jukes, powered his way into the end zone when it looked like he could be tackled on the 2 or 3.

This is now the second long, impressive TD run off a pass the Chiefs have scored in a row since DeShon Elliott went down. I have no idea if the two are related — Kelce looked like an unstoppable force on that TD — but this seems like something either Baltimore needs to fix ASAP or something the Chiefs may continue to exploit. Mecole Hardman seems like the next guy up to have one of these if they keep attacking that second level.

Chiefs and Kelce answer with their own highlight reel touchdown

Travis Kelce saw Lamar Jackson’s jump-pass touchdown and answered with his own impressive rumble down the sideline to score a touchdown.

The Ravens had the Chiefs in a third-and-four situation with Patrick Mahomes scrambling with a blitz coming up the middle. He bought just enough time to find Kelce downfield and then he used a handful of blocks to find his way into the end zone to give the Chiefs an 11-point lead again.

In all, it was a 46-yard touchdown for Kelce from Mahomes. The Chiefs quarterback has 286 yards and three touchdowns.

See the impressive play for yourself below.

People better talk about Lamar Jackson The Passer tomorrow

I’m among the « Lamar Jackson can actually pass » believers. Whenever Mahomes does something like a no-look, we see endless gifs about it and the world gushes. Jackson’s jump TD pass on 2nd and long just now after a sack was fantastic and while they’re initially talking about it on the broadcast, I’m guessing it’ll fade by the morning with some new storyline on something great Mahomes does later. Jackson also had a nifty sidearm pass to Mark Andrews as the Ravens were marching down the field at the end of the first half and nobody mentioned that one at all.

He can pass! How about that! That jump pass could be silhouetted and used for his logo, like Jumpman.

Lamar Jackson uses jump pass to throw touchdown

Lamar Jackson used a jump pass to find a wide-open Hollywood Brown to answer the Chiefs opening drive of the second half a with a touchdown of their own.

The shootout between Patrick Mahomes and Jackson is officially on.

If you’re a Chiefs fan, the defense is becoming a cause for concern. After a penalty, the Ravens faced a 2nd-and-24 situation on the drive and easily erased that with a 20-yard catch by Mark Andrews before Jackson found Brown wide-open on a blown coverage by the secondary.

Pringle to the house for the Chiefs

Byron Pringle took a pass from Patrick Mahomes to the house on a cross route and ran 40-yards for the touchdown to put the Chiefs up 11 in Baltimore.

Pringle is the ninth different receiver for Mahomes tonight as the Ravens defense does everything it can to shut down Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce. So far, that plan isn’t working as other receivers continue to step up for the Chiefs.

Have we talked about the new jersey number rules yet?

I love seeing these single digits all over the place. Julio Jones wearing #2. Hollywood Brown wearing #5. James Conner # 6. It was already bizarro season with the 17 games, but throwing in players being able to wear random single digit numbers and it ups the ante just a little bit.

Since Florio mentioned Deshaun Watson at halftime

He’s rostered in 24% of CBS leagues and 11% of Yahoo leagues. I assume, based on the amount of QB injuries today, that he’s one of the most-added players in fantasy on Wednesday (or whenever your waivers run). I don’t know if that will spur the NFL on to do something about all of the accusations and lawsuits, but it’ll be an interesting next few days to see how this all plays out.

Our halftime show is an Emmy Awards update. Here you go…

Counter-programming!

-Jason Sudeikis, Brett Goldstein and Hannah Waddingham took home awards for « Ted Lasso. » My mind is still blown that Waddingham was the « shame! » nun from « Game of Thrones. »

-I’m not sure if anyone is a fan of the illusionist Darren Brown, but I saw his show on Broadway in 2019 and Sudeikis plays an amazing part in it. That’s all I think I can say. I have no idea how anyone can go see that show but man, it was awesome.

-I’d like to see The Boys win for best drama. Highly doubt that will happen.

-I thought WandaVision was one of the best shows of the year, for whatever that’s worth. No dice tonight. Although Evan Peters won for Mare of Easttown

-The Crown won pretty much every drama award

-I caught some of « Hacks » a couple months ago. It wasn’t bad! Although Kaley Cuoco was really good in The Flight Attendant.

-I love that Cobra Kai was nominated for Best Comedy series.

-I didn’t know who Billy Porter really was before having to watch « Cinderella » on repeat every day for the last week. I’m a big fan now. I’d watch more Billy Porter anywhere.

-« Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square » won! I am a Christmas movie sucker. So I’ll put it on the list. Highly recommend Klaus if anyone is similarly disposed.

Second half about to begin. Let’s go Ravens! Get that over!

Ordinary Joe plot, in case you’re wondering

Not as sci-fi-ey as I thought. From wikipedia:

The series centers on Joe Kimbreau as he makes a pivotal, life-changing decision at his graduation from Syracuse University. The show follows him on three parallel timelines, starting 10 years after his graduation: as a police officer, following in his father’s footsteps; as a music star, following his passion; and as a nurse, after he marries his love.

I do like the fact that Latavius Murray, Syracuse native, scored that TD and they played a promo for a show about a guy who went to SU. I’m sure that was planned!

Fantasy players are not going to like this backfield

It was Ty’Son Williams looking great on that scoring drive, and then Latavius Murray punches it in. And we haven’t even gotten into Devonta Freeman yet, who looks like he might be extraneous at this point (until, of course, both of these players suffer season-ending injuries in the second half of this game).

If I had to choose one, I think it’d be Williams — he seems to be the more dynamic and pass-catchey of the two, whereas Murray looks like the « get us a first down in short yardage » back.

Also, I’d like to interrupt this post by saying I’m going to look up what « Ordinary Joe » is all about. Looks like a sci-fi show! I was a huge fan of Debris and it was really getting some momentum before they canceled it after one season.

Ravens tie Chiefs with Murray touchdown

Latavius Murray capped off a nine-play, 72-yard drive with a 5-yard rumble into the end zone. After the game started with three quick touchdowns, the teams exchanged punts before the Ravens focused on the run game and continued to gash the Chiefs defense.

The Ravens now have 131 yards rushing, and the Chiefs defense has made no adjustments to stop it so far.

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs will have a little more than three minutes before halftime to retake the lead.

Hollywood Brown gets a nice catch!

I was one of the early Marquise Brown believers in fantasy football and kind of gave up on him this year, in terms of drafting him — I figured Sammy Watkins would be taking over that deep threat role and Devin Duvernay would take a step forward and work his way into some significant snaps. I’d like to be wrong! He looked good on that catch just now.

Also, Latavius Murray — for whatever this is worth — seems to be very good at taking the fake handoffs from Lamar Jackson already. You’d think if you haven’t been working together long it might lead to some issues, or even an « off » performance. But it looked good enough for me to notice on a couple of those fakes.

I’m not sure they had to throw the entire Super Bowl line under the bus like that

I know they didn’t have a great game, but there’s probably a way you can show that the Chiefs revamped their line without using shots of the players and highlighting their shortcomings. You have a graphics department, have the new ones emerge out of the cupboards or something!

I’ve just been informed that « Ted Lasso » won a ton already at the Emmys. I’ll fire off an update later for those interested in who’s winning there.

How concerned should the Ravens be about their pass protection vs. the Chiefs?

How concerned should the Ravens be about their pass protection vs. the Chiefs?

Baltimore allowed three sacks and the sixth-most quarterback pressures of any team in Week 1. And that was with the Raiders running the second-fewest blitzes per dropback of any team in the league.

Now the Ravens face a Chiefs defense that has a pair of players in Chris Jones (shown) and Frank Clark who have combined for 91½ sacks in their careers, and they will do so with a dramatically different offensive line. Left tackle Ronnie Stanley is inactive with an ankle injury, so Alejandro Villanueva will move from the right side to Stanley’s spot. And third-year player Patrick Mekari will go into the right tackle spot, his first time at the tackle position in the NFL. The Athletic’s Jeff Zrebiec expects Andre Smith to be the swing tackle.

The Ravens have allowed three or more sacks in three consecutive games, worst in the NFL. They have allowed 11.0 sacks in that span.

The most appealing bet for Chiefs-Ravens

The more I look at this game, the more I gravitate to one bet in particular — the Ravens over 38.5 points scored, which is at +725 (or 29-to-4) on BetMGM. A more timid « over 34.5 » is at +400, or 4-to-1.

But if you truly think this is going to be a slugfest, and you think Baltimore has a shot at a win, why not imagine a SNF early-season game where Baltimore drops 41 and wins this game 41-38? Is it likely? The 79 total would far eclipse the O/U but hey, look at what TB/ATL did today. And of course the odds wouldn’t be great if people thought it was going to happen, but these early season games can be a little screwy anyway.

Zrebiec: What the Ravens need to do to beat the Chiefs tonight

Zrebiec: What the Ravens need to do to beat the Chiefs tonight

The Ravens have lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in three consecutive seasons, and they enter the latest matchup after a Week 1 loss and dealing with myriad injuries. Here are a few keys to breaking the losing streak to the Chiefs:

Make Patrick Mahomes uncomfortable: Mahomes has taken apart a blitz-happy Ravens’ defense in recent meetings. It’s been like he’s known what’s coming and where it’s coming from. The Ravens have to figure out a way to get pressure on Mahomes without constantly relying on the blitz.

Create big plays by any means necessary: With extensive injuries at running back, wide receiver and along the offensive line, the Ravens are going to be challenged to consistently mount long drives and keep pace with the high-powered Chiefs. Whether it’s on offense, defense or special teams, the Ravens will have to find a way to get some big plays.

Win in the red zone: In last year’s 34-20 Chiefs victory, the Ravens went just 1-for-4 in the red zone while Kansas City was 3-for-3. If the Ravens can force a few field goals and then punch the ball in the end zone when they get inside the Chiefs’ 20, they’ll have a chance to win.

This one could be closer than anyone thinks

This one could be closer than anyone thinks

I’m still not believing this game will be as far apart as the oddsmakers have it, with the Ravens, at home, on a big national stage, 3.5 point underdogs and +150 on the moneyline at BetMGM. This is an electric team coming into Week 2 motivated after last week’s overtime loss.

Sammy Watkins may be the missing piece Lamar Jackson’s been looking for in the passing game the last few years — Watkins was targeted eight times in Week 1, catching four passes for 96 yards. Baltimore’s run game is as injury-riddled as they come, but Ty’Son Williams averaged 7.2 YPC last week and both Latavius Murray and Devonta Freeman are another week into this playbook. The Ravens led the league in rushing yards in Week 1, with the same injury issues (Jackson carried much of that load, but still).

Kansas City is still Kansas City, but the Browns, another run-heavy team, kept it close last week, and Baker Mayfield isn’t the same threat as Jackson on the ground.

This should be a punch-for-punch fireworks show, and don’t be surprised if Baltimore comes out victorious when the smoke clears.

What Nate Taylor is looking for from the Chiefs tonight

Unlike the Ravens, a healthy Chiefs team entering M&T Bank Stadium means that coach Andy Reid will get his first look at most of his projected starters on defense. After missing last week’s game, two of the Chiefs’ defensive leaders in strong safety Tyrann Mathieu and defensive end Frank Clark, are expected to return and make their season debut.

The Chiefs’ defense will need to improve after struggling in the first half last week against the Cleveland Browns’ rushing attack. The Ravens will present a similar challenge with superstar quarterback Lamar Jackson and running back Ty’Son Williams.

On offense, superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes relied heavily on star tight end Travis Kelce and star receiver Tyreek Hill to orchestrate the Chiefs’ comeback victory. More than 80 percent of Mahomes’ 337 passing yards against the Browns — 273 yards, to be exact — were accounted for by Kelce and Hill. With a new offensive line, the Chiefs are seeking to have more balance when distributing the ball.

Two young players who could be utilized more against the Ravens’ defense are second-year running back Clyde Edwards-Heliare and third-year receiver Mecole Hardman.

Sammy Watkins as an underrated fantasy WR

Baltimore’s Sammy Watkins is only rostered in 22 percent of CBSSports.com leagues and is slated to start in just 4 percent in Week 2. He could have a big game against his former team and possibly vault his way to the first tier of the waiver wire heap for Week 3 — outside of the mess of QBs we’ll likely see picked up, and possible Cordarrelle Patterson believers (I’m on record as one!).

Watkins may be joined as a target in fantasy free agency by Quez Watkins, in a fun twist. My guess is if Sammy Watkins goes 8/6/65 people will just shrug, but 7/5/71/1 or 11/9/144 or 9/7/50/2 or maybe even 9/7/50/1 will do it. He needs an attention-getting game with either a TD or 130+ yards, not just one with decent volume to prove his realness to fantasy players.

Kansas City Chiefs (1-0) at Baltimore Ravens (0-1), 8:20 p.m. ET, NBC

Kansas City: The Chiefs offense is still potent, and Kansas City seems to have the Ravens’ number. Andy Reid is 6-1 against Baltimore, and the Chiefs have won the past four matchups. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes has averaged 378.7 yards and accounted for 10 touchdowns and just one interception in three career games against the Ravens.

Baltimore: The Ravens could be 1-0 if it weren’t for the fumble Raiders defensive end Carl Nassib forced Lamar Jackson to commit in overtime Monday night. Jackson otherwise played like a star as he passed for 235 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 86 yards. He did, however, lose another fumble earlier in the game. Taking care of the ball will be key against the Chiefs.
