University wins girls tennis regional title – Greeley Tribune


Baseball

University 14, Platte Valley 0, 5 inn., in Greeley: University scored in every inning, producing three or more runs in all but one inning. The Bulldogs out-hit Platte Valley 14-2. University senior Nolan Johnson and Greg Garza each had three hits. Garza had two doubles and drove in a game-high five RBI. Junior River Jackson went 1 for 4 with a home run and 3 RBI. Junior Gunnar Gonzer pitched all five innings for the Bulldogs. He allowed just two hits, striking out seven and walking one. Senior Jose Lopez had both of the Broncos’ hits. University improved to 9-2 overall, 9-2 in 3A Patriot League play. Platte Valley dropped to 3-10, 3-10.

Northridge 17, Mountain View 9, in Loveland: Northridge won its second consecutive game, playing the second of four games in three days. The Grizzlies jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the second. Mountain View scored six unanswered runs to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. With the game still tied, Northridge took firm control with eight runs in the top of the sixth and three more in the seventh. Sophomore Gannon McGeen hit 5 for 6 with two RBI for the Grizzlies. He was one of four Northridge players with two RBI. The other three were sophomore Justus Alcala, sophomore Jace Reid and sophomore Mark Felix-llamas. The Grizzlies improved to 7-5 with the nonleague win.

Windsor 7, Thornton 0, in Windsor: Windsor bounced back nicely from a rare loss a day earlier to Roosevelt. The Wizards improved to 11-2 with the nonconference victory.

Sterling 10, Resurrection Christian 2, in Sterling: Sterling dominated this matchup of top teams. The Tigers are sixth in CHSAANow.com’s most recent 3A rankings. Resurrection Christian is eighth. Sterling gained all the momentum early, going up 3-0, then expanded its lead to 9-0 in the fourth. Senior Zach Cook went 3 for 4 with two runs for the Cougars. Resurrection Christian actually out-hit Sterling 10-8, but the Tigers had a 7-2 advantage in RBI. The Cougars fell to 8-5 overall, 8-5 in 3A Patriot League play.

Haxtun 17, Prairie 2, in New Raymer: Prairie was unable to slow down Haxtun’s attack, as the Mustangs fell to 0-9 overall, 0-7 in 1A District 5 play.

Girls soccer

Mead 10, Greeley Central 0, in Mead: Mead dominated from the get-go, going up 7-0 in the first half. Despite the loss, Greeley Central senior goalkeeper Lanie Freeland racked up 39 saves. The Wildcats fell to 0-7 overall, 0-7 in 4A/5A Northern Colorado Athletics Conference play.

Centaurus 3, Greeley West 0, in Greeley: West was just a step behind Centaurus all game, giving up two goals in the first half and one more in the second. The Spartans dropped to 1-7 overall, 1-7 in 4A/5A Northern Colorado Athletics Conference play.

Girls tennis

University and Eaton place first and second at 3A Region 4 tournament, in Windsor: University won the Region 4 tournament and will take athletes at four positions to the 3A state tournament, Friday-Saturday at Memorial Park in Colorado Springs. Eaton was the regional runner-up, and it will advance all four of its doubles teams to state. Qualifying for the Bulldogs were junior No. 1 singles player Elle Richardson (regional champion), sophomore No. 3 singles player Abby Marion (regional runner-up), the No. 2 doubles team of junior Katheryn Halverson and freshman Halle Getting (runner-up) and the No. 4 doubles tandem of seniors Monica Hernandez-Jackson and Natalya Barton (runner-up). Advancing for Eaton are the No. 1 doubles pair of juniors Zoie Floryance and Mariah Noonan (champion), the No. 2 doubles team of freshman Kallie Salberg and junior Taylor Bradshaw (champion), the No. 3 doubles team of sophomore Emily Brisendine and sophomore Abby Copeland (runner-up) and the No. 4 doubles pair of sophomore Shelby Shuman and freshman Tayla Wiedeman (champion). Reds sophomore Aubrey Ledall will be a state tournament alternate at No. 1 singles, freshman Kyleigh Kieler will be an alternate at No. 2 singles, and sophomore Jayden Kuskie will be an alternate at No. 3 singles. Upstart Severance will have participants in three positions in its first girls state tennis tournament: freshman No. 2 singles player Ava Zink (runner-up), the No. 1 doubles team of sophomores Paige Janke and Jolie Ingle (runner-up) and the No. 3 doubles tandem of junior Alexa Terrazas and sophomore Maliyah Braveheart (champion). The Silver Knights’ No. 4 doubles pair of junior Vanessa Lui and sophomore Frankie Lucero will be an alternate. Northridge has two state qualifiers: senior No. 2 singles player Andrea Flores (runner-up) and senior No. 3 singles player Yadira Soto Roblero (champion).

University dominates home meet, in Greeley: University’s boys (121 points) placed first and its girls (85) finished third at the University Bulldog Invitational. Severance won the girls meet (119.5) and its boys were 10th (28). Greeley Central’s girls (50.5) and boys (61) placed sixth. Dayspring Christian’s boys (88) finished third out of 13 teams. Its girls (49.5) were seventh out of 12 teams. Northridge’s boys (64) were fifth and its girls (47) placed eighth. Weld Central’s boys (39) finished eighth and its girls (42) were ninth. Greeley West’s boys (33) placed ninth and its girls (13) were 12th. Briggsdale placed 10th (21) in the girls standings and 13th (1) in the boys standings. Prairie’s girls (16) and boys (23) were 11th. Pawnee’s boys (6) placed 12th. University had first-place finishes from: its girls 400 relay (52.41), senior Helena Abeyta (34′ 3.5″, girls shot put), senior Nolan Johnson (11.26, boys 100; 21′ 9.75″, stadium record, long jump), senior Zach Clark (23.23, boys 200), its boys 800 relay (1:32.76) and senior Jack Myers (47′ 4.75″, boys shot put). Severance received first-place performances from: sophomore Alexys Hill (12.83, girls 100; 26.55, 200), Hannah Schissler (2:31.57, girls 800; 5:56.30, 1,600), its girls 3,200 relay (10:58.20) and freshman Caden Schweer (10:27.97, boys 3,200). Northridge had first-place finishes from senior McKenna Cone (14:00.54, girls 3,200), its girls 800 relay (1:50.70) and senior Colton Magnuson (53.19, boys 400). Dayspring freshman Eboselulu Omofoma had first-place finishes in the girls 100 hurdles (16.14) and high jump (5′ 3″). The Eagles also had a first-place finish from their boys 400 relay (45.80). Senior Serena Bunch provided Greeley Central with a first-place finish (7′ 10″, pole vault), as did Wildcats senior Heather Yackey (134′ 5″, girls discus) and junior Sean Rotter (2:08.99, boys 800; 4:53.95, 1,600). Weld Central senior George Graybill finished first in boys discus with a stadium record (156′ 1″).

Roosevelt boys place first at NoCo Series No. 3 meet, in Berthoud: Roosevelt’s boys team placed first (127.33) out of 14 teams at the NoCo Series No. 3 meet, hosted by the Rough Riders. Roosevelt’s girls (65) finished fifth out of 17 teams. Windsor’s boys (93) and girls (91) were runners-up. Frontier Academy’s boys were fourth (79.5) and its girls were 10th (30.5). Valley placed ninth (33) in the boys standings and 13th (10) in the girls standings. Niwot won the girls title with 137 points. Roosevelt’s boys had six first-place finishes: from its 800 relay (1:30.71), its 400 relay (44.38), Robert Orozco (51.52, 400), its 1,600 relay (3:27.79), Brigham Hartson (11′ 8″, pole vault) and Tucker Peterson (21′, long jump). Its girls had first-place finishes from its 1,600 relay (4:17.84) and Paige Beall (10′ 7″, pole vault). Windsor had first-place finishes from Elle Sanders (12.69, girls 100), its girls 400 relay (50.90), Ellie Sanders (26.28, girls 200), Evan Zapf (6′ 2″, boys high jump) and Devyn Thornton (17′ 4.25″, girls long jump). Frontier had first-place finishes from Brayden Savage (10.94, boys 100), Temesgen Fanning (43′ 11″, boys triple jump) and Jay Rothe (124′ 8″, boys discus).

Eaton boys win Platte Valley Meet No. 2, in Kersey: The Eaton boys scored 127 points to place first out of 13 teams at the Platte Valley Meet No. 2. Resurrection Christian was the runner-up (100) in the boys standings. The Reds were the runner-up (103.5) in the 11-team girls standings, and the Cougars were eighth (39) in the girls standings. Host Platte Valley was fifth (63) in the boys standings and ninth (32) in the girls standings. Eaton had eight first-place finishes in individual events: from Andie Rasmussen (2:30.32, girls 800), its girls 800 relay (1:58.14), its girls 800 sprint medley (1:57.25), Ainslie Ross (4′ 10″, girls high jump), Zac Grable (40.25, boys 300 hurdles), its boys 1,600 relay (3:35.54), its boys 3,200 relay (8:54.19) and Coal Kuzov (5′ 10″, boys high jump). Resurrection Christian had first-place finishes from Braycen Buxman (10.95, boys 100; 50.17, 400), Caleb Sutter (2:10.19, boys 800) and Holden Tatman (49′ 10″, boys shot put). Platte Valley’s Devyn Lauer set a new school record in the boys 200 (21.61), placing first. Lauer has broken school records in the 100 and 200 with regularity this spring. The Broncos also received first-place finishes from Kyle Horn (16.95, boys 110 hurdles), its boys 400 relay (43.22) and Kade McDaniel (42′ 11″, boys triple jump).

Fort Lupton competes at the First Rumble on the Divide, in Elizabeth: Fort Lupton scored four points to place 17th out of 17 teams in the girls standings and it scored one point to place 19th out of 19 teams in the boys standings at the talent-laden First Rumble on the Divide. Host Elizabeth (131.5) won the girls title, and Eagle Valley (88.50) won the boys title. Freshman Payton Faulhaber led the Bluedevils with a fifth-place finish (4′ 4″) in girls high jump.

Baseball

Northridge 7, Greeley Central 1, in Greeley: Northridge stayed red hot, winning its third consecutive game and completed a two-game sweep in a three-day stretch against crosstown rivals. The Grizzlies beat Greeley West 1-0 two days before. Against Greeley Central, Northridge scored the game’s initial runs to go up 2-0 in the top of the fourth. After the Wildcats trimmed the gap to 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth, the Grizzlies slammed the door with five more runs in the sixth and seventh. Junior Nick Garland hit 3 for 4 with two RBI for Northridge. The Grizzlies’ pitching duo of junior Cody Bevins and sophomore Bubba Hernandez held Central to just one hit and one earned run, striking out five and walking four. Junior Jacob Hernandez had the Wildcats’ one hit. Northridge improved to 8-5 with the nonconference win. The Wildcats fell to 0-13.

Fort Morgan 6, Northridge 0, in Fort Morgan: A few hours after picking up a win against Greeley Central, Northridge saw its three-game win streak snapped, dropping a league game to Fort Morgan. The Mustangs held the Grizzlies to just two hits — one apiece by sophomores Dylan Hubbard and Justus Alcala. Northridge dropped to 8-6 overall, 4-5 in 4A/3A Long Peaks League play.

Valley 13, Platte Valley 2, 6 inn., Kersey: Valley trailed 2-1 before exploding for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth and five more in the sixth. Senior Izzy Gutierrez and junior Justin Pearson had two RBI apiece for the Vikings. Gutierrez drove in three RBI, and Pearson recorded two RBI. Each of them had a double. Valley senior Ty Stotts picked up the win on the mound, allowing two unearned runs on three hits, striking out six and walking none in five innings. This win snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Vikings. Valley improved to 4-11 overall, 4-11 in 3A Patriot League play. Platte Valley fell to 3-11, 3-11.

Dayspring Christian Academy 17, Briggsdale 1, 4 inn., in Greeley: In both teams’ regular season finales, Dayspring Christian took control from the get-go, going up 4-1 in the first inning and 13-1 in the second. The Eagles out-hit Briggsdale 13-4. Dayspring wrapped up its regular season at 9-6 overall, 5-5 in 2A/1A Mile High League play. The Falcons end their regular season at 4-8, 4-3. Teams will place in statewide district tournaments this weekend, with 12 total teams moving on to regionals June 19.

Eaton 18, Strasburg 0, 4 inn., in Strasburg: Eaton improved to 14-1 overall, 14-1 in 3A Patriot League play and won its eighth consecutive game — its longest win streak of the season. Junior Dirk Duncan and senior Ryan Ure each had three hits for the Reds. Duncan and senior Logan Moser each drove in a game-high four RBI. Moser had his first home run of the season. Eaton out-hit Strasburg 15-2. The pitching duo of Moser and sophomore Tate Smith struck out eight and walked just one during four shutout innings.

University 11, Liberty Common 1, in Greeley: University assumed full control quickly, going up 4-0 in the first inning. Seniors Ty Myers, Mikey Roy and Nolan Johnson had two hits apiece for the Bulldogs. Myers had a game-high three RBI. He also had his first home run of the season. Johnson had a triple and his first home run of the season. Roy and junior Kanon Padilla each had two RBI. The pitching duo of Padilla and senior Michael Guzman combined to allow just three hits. University improved to 10-2 overall, 10-2 in 3A Patriot League play.

Windsor 7, Berthoud 0, in Windsor: Windsor secured its second win in consecutive days by this score. Senior Noah Barker and junior Cullen Verville each had two hits for the Wizards. Verville had two of Windsor’s three RBI. Wizards senior pitcher Anthony Hernandez surrendered just seven hits, striking out 10 and walking one in seven shutout innings. Windsor improved to 12-2 with the nonconference win.

Severance 5, Mead 1, in Severance: Severance extended its win streak to nine and has moved its record to 12-2 overall. The Silver Knights put forth a supremely consistent, steady effort, scoring in four of six innings. Junior Tyler Hansen hit 3 for 3 with two runs for Severance. Sophomores Austin Neeley and Joe Tamburro had two hits apiece. Neeley recorded a game-high two RBI. Silver Knights junior Carson Fagan held Mead to just three hits and one earned run, striking out 12 and walking none in seven innings on the mound. Severance improved to 12-2 overall with the nonleague win.

Fort Morgan 2, Greeley West 0, in Fort Morgan: Greeley West dropped a nonconference nail-biter, falling to 5-9 overall. Both of Fort Morgan’s runs came in the bottom of the second. The Spartans had just four hits — one each from junior Odden Garcia, senior Gio Munoz, senior Nolan Hydock and junior Rodney Villegas. Villegas was rock solid on the mound for West, allowing just two earned runs on eight hits, striking out two and walking three in six innings. The Spartans fell to 5-9 overall.

Longmont 6, Roosevelt 4, in Johnstown: Longmont snapped Roosevelt’s five-game win streak, as the Rough Riders fell to 8-6 overall. Roosevelt was playing catch-up all game, as the Trojans led 2-0 after one inning, 4-0 after three and 5-3 after four. Senior Kyle Jenson hit 2 for 4 with an RBI for the Rough Riders.

Boys lacrosse

Erie 14, Windsor 4, in Erie: In a battle of 4A heavyweights, Erie’s consistent offense was too much for Windsor. The Tigers are ranked third in 4A by CHSAANow.com, while the Wizards are sixth. Windsor led 4-2 through two quarters, but Erie outscored the Wizards 12-0 in the third and fourth quarters. Windsor fell to 5-3 overall, 3-3 in 4A Northern Colorado Athletics Conference play.

Track and Field

Roosevelt fares well at The Titan Invitational, in Colorado Springs: The Roosevelt boys (62 points) tied for fourth out of 13 teams, while its girls (83) placed seventh at the Titan Invitational. Junior Jaden Casanueva won the boys 300-meter hurdles in 43.12 seconds. Casanueva also placed third in the 110 hurdles (17.19). Senior Alexander Sauer was the runner-up in the boys 200 (23.40) behind The Classical Academy’s Drew Morton (22.56). Senior Logan Champa placed second in boys long jump (20′) behind The Classical Academy’s Jordan Wenger (20′ 7″). Champa was second in boys triple jump (42′ 3.5″), again behind Wenger (44′ 9.5″). Sophomore Chloe Sauer placed third in the girls 200-meter dash (27.36 seconds) behind event-winner Avry Kennison of Thompson Valley (26.60) and runner-up Samantha Bontz of Loveland (27.22).

Frontier Academy turns in strong performances at Dakota Ridge Invitational, in Lakewood: Frontier Academy had a pair of athletes compete against some big-school competition at the Dakota Ridge Invitational. Senior Sylas Chambers placed seventh (2:01.76) in the boys 800-meter run. Lakewood senior Clifton Thompson won the race in 1:57.61. Senior Justin Quammen finished 10th in the boys 1,600 (4:39.25). Green Mountain senior Grahm Tuohy-Gaydos won in 4:25.59.

Platte Valley finishes fifth at the LoboCat Invitational, in Fort Collins: The Platte Valley boys (49 points) and girls (35) placed fifth out of six teams in the LoboCat Invitational, hosted by Fossil Ridge at French Field. Fossil Ridge won the boys (178) and girls (238) team titles. Broncos junior Devyn Lauer won the boys 100-meter dash (10.94 seconds). The Broncos’ boys 400 relay also placed first (43.61). Platte Valley junior Jamie Bond placed third in the girls pole vault (6′ 6″). Broncos senior Kade McDaniel tied for second in the boys pole vault (10′ 6″).

Windsor’s Ellie Sanders fares well in 100, in Highlands Ranch: Windsor didn’t place as a team, but junior Ellie Sanders finished fifth with a time of 12.44 seconds in the girls 100-meter dash at the Holy War meet, hosted by Valor Christian. Mullen senior Kaleah Ruff won the race in 12.01. Host Valor won the girls team title with 117 points. Lutheran won the boys title with 104.
