Local athletes have strong performances at weekend track meets – Greeley Tribune


Baseball

Roosevelt 13, Severance 0, 5 inn., in Johnstown: Roosevelt picked up a marquee early season win to improve to 2-2 overall, 1-1 in Class 4A/3A Longs Peak League play. The Rough Riders used an eight-run bottom of the second to jump out to a 12-0 lead. Senior Rocco Salvatore hit 3 for 4 with two RBI and two runs for Roosevelt. Seniors Kyle Jenson and Easton Herrera had two RBI apiece for the Rough Riders. No Severance player had more than one hit. Senior Bryce Andrews went the distance on the mound for Roosevelt, allowing five hits, striking out two and walking one across five shutout innings. The Silver Knights fell to 3-2 overall, 2-2 in Longs Peak play.

Northridge 7, Thompson Valley 3, in Greeley: Northridge snapped a three-game losing streak, taking a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third, then adding four more runs in the fifth and sixth. Sophomore Gannon McGeen hit 3 for 4 with, a double, triple and three RBI for the Grizzlies. Sophomore Bubba Hernandez picked up the win on the mound for Northridge, allowing two earned runs on three hits, striking out eight and walking five in five innings. The Grizzlies improved to 2-3 overall, 1-2 in 4A/3A Longs Peak League play.

Highland 10, Dawson 0, in Ault: Highland improved to 3-0 overall, 1-0 in 2A/1A Mile High League win, thanks to a no-hitter by junior pitcher Sam Hnizdil. Hnizdil struck out 10 and walked just three during five shutout innings. Offensively, senior Travis Woods hit 2 for 3 with a double and three RBI. Junior Jordan Walkup went 2 for 3 with a double and one RBI.

Weld Central 17, Arvada 0, 4 inn., in Arvada: After dropping its season opener a day earlier, Weld Central secured to dominate victory to improve to 1-1 overall, 1-1 in 4A/3A Colorado League play. Rebels freshman Easton Hoffman tossed a no-hitter, striking out 10 and walking just one in four innings. Senior Cassidy Parks hit 3 for 3 with five RBI and three runs for Weld Central. Junior Tanner Nelson went 2 for 3 with two doubles and three RBI.

Girls soccer

Dawson School 11, Union Colony 0, in Lafayette: Union Colony dropped to 0-3 overall, 0-1 in 2A Mile High West play with this loss to the top-ranked team in 2A, according to CHSAANow.com. The Mustangs scored all 11 of their goals in the first half. Despite the loss, Timberwolves freshman goalkeeper Deloris Michaeux had 18 saves.

Girls tennis

Erie 4, Greeley Central 3, in Greeley: Despite losing the dual, Greeley Central won three of four doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, the senior duo of Micaela Hidalgo and Ariela Rodriguez won 6-0, 6-2. At No. 4 doubles, the team of senior Sage Kondly and freshman Cecily Mash earned the Wildcats’ tightest win, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3. Central fell to 0-4 in duals.

Track and field

Highland, Valley claim team titles at the Valhalla Classic, Gilcrest: Highland (162) took the girls title, and host Valley (148) claimed the boys title in the five-team Valhalla Classic. The Huskies girls (95.5) were fourth, and the Vikings girls (74) were fifth. Host Valley had seven individual champions: Erica Gorman (6:39.77, girls 1,600), Jeff Gore (11.59, boys 100; 23.20, 200), Salomon Martinez (52.95, boys 400), Sawyer Peterson (11:35.79, boys 3,200) and Aidan Brownell (18.59, boys 110 hurdles; 45.77, 300 hurdles). Highland had 11 first-place finishes: Mary Jones (13.25, girls 100; 27.12, 200), Stephanie Bingley (2:55.86, girls 800), Alexus Rigg (5′ 2″, girls high jump), Meeka Hoke (7′, girls pole vault), Sierra Staab (14′ 7.5″, girls long jump; 33′ 4.5″, girls triple jump), Kelsey Truax (32′ 0.5″, girls shot put), its boys 1,600 relay team (3:48.06), Joseph Faryna (8′ 6″, boys pole vault) and Kyle Howard (18′ 9.75″, boys long jump).

Weld Central competes in the Max Marr Invitational, in Berthoud: The Weld Central boys (35) and its girls (33) each placed ninth in the Max Mar Invitational. The Fort Lupton boys (6) placed 19th. Host Berthoud (132) won the girls title. Centaurus (143) won the boys title. Weld Central’s Dilynn Stonner won the girls discus (95′ 10″). Fellow Rebels thrower George Graybill won the boys discus (154′).

Baseball

University 10, Valley 0, 5 inn., in Greeley: University swept a two-game series against 3A foe Valley, improving to 5-0 overall, 5-0 in 3A Patriot League play. Senior Nolan Johnson hit 3 for 3 with one RBI and two runs for the Bulldogs. Junior Parker Disparti went 2 for 3 with a home run, double and four RBI. The University pitching duo of juniors Kanon Padilla and Gunnar Ponzar tossed five shutout innings, allowing just two hits, striking out nine and walking eight. Seniors Ty Stotts and Aydyn Lechuga had a hit apiece for Valley. The Vikings dropped to 2-4 overall, 2-4 in 3A Patriot League play.

Eaton 23, Liberty Common 0, 3 inn., in Fort Collins: Eaton improved to 6-0 overall, 6-0 in 3A Patriot League play with its sixth consecutive shutout to start the season. The Reds — ranked first in 3A by CHSAANow.com — have outscored their opponents 77-0. Senior Cole Schumacher and junior Dirk Duncan each had three hits, two doubles and two RBI for Eaton. Sophomore Walker Martin hit 2 for 3 with a game-high five RBI. Senior Logan Moser allowed just one hit, striking out four and walking one in three shutout innings on the mound.

Windsor 7, Mead 2, in Mead: Windsor stayed unbeaten, 4-0 overall, 3-0 in 4A/5A Northern Colorado Athletics Conference play, with another lopsided victory. In five games, the Wizards have outscored their opponents 45-5 this season. Windsor jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, then closed strong, scoring three more runs in the top of the seventh. Senior Jimmy Chastain hit 4 for 4 with two runs for the Wizards. Senior Nelson Gibbens went 1 for 3 with two RBI. Windsor’s pitching duo of senior Anthony Hernandez and junior Riley Warmbrod combined to allow no earned runs on four hits, striking out six and walking four.

Greeley West 6, Silver Creek 4, in Longmont: Greeley West took a two-run lead with a three-run second inning, then added a few insurance runs to improve to 2-4 overall, including 2-1 in 4A/5A Northern Colorado Athletics Conference play. Junior Edgar Urquidi hit 2 for 4 with two RBI for the Spartans. Junior Rodney Villegas pitched all seven innings for West, allowing four earned runs on nine hits, striking out four and walking one.

Severance 9, Mountain View 8, in Loveland: Severance bounced back from a rough loss to Roosevelt a day earlier. The difference in the game, ultimately, was the Silver Knights’ one run in the top of the first. Mountain View matched Severance’s two runs in the third and its sixth runs in the fifth. Sophomores Dillon Jost and Nolan Hertzke had two hits apiece for the Silver Knights. Hertzke and sophomore Camaron Christensen each had two RBI. Severance improved to 4-2 overall, 3-2 in 4A/3A Longs Peak League play.

Dayspring Christian 13, Rocky Mountain Lutheran 9, in Denver: Dayspring got back in the win column after a three-game slide, improving to 2-3 with the nonleague victory. The Eagles erased an early 1-0 deficit with five runs in the top of the second then kept tacking on from there. Senior Kyle Harper and junior Tyler Sugden each recorded four hits. Senior Tayler Barnhart went 3 for 5 with two RBI. Barnhart also picked up the pitching win, allowing four earned runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts and one walk in five innings. Junior Zane Aikens had a team-high three RBI on 2 for 2 hitting.

Skyline 18, Greeley Central 0, 6 inn., in Greeley: Skyline scored in each of the final four innings, including a 12-run sixth inning. Junior Jacob Hernandez had two of Greeley Central’s five hits. The Wildcats fell to 0-6 overall, 0-3 in 4A/5A Northern Colorado Athletics Conference play.

Riverdale Ridge 6, Roosevelt 3, in Johnstown: Roosevelt was unable to follow up its big win a day earlier against Severance with another win. The Rough Riders dropped to 2-3 overall, including 1-2 in 4A/3A Longs Peak League play. Roosevelt jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead before giving up four runs in the top of the second. Junior Brock Saya hit 2 for 3 with a run for the Rough Riders. Senior Kyle Jenson went 1 for 4 with a double and two RBI. Four of Riverdale’s six runs were unearned.

Bennett 11, Weld Central 1, 6 inn., in Keenesburg: Weld Central produced only two hits, one apiece from seniors Daniel Begler and Garret Becker. Becker scored the Rebels’ only run. Weld Central fell to 1-2 overall, 1-1 in 4A/3A Colorado League play.

Fort Lupton drops two, in Fort Lupton: Fort Lupton lost both games of a doubleheader to Thornton, 16-8 and 15-0. In Game 1, junior Zavian Chavez went 4 for 4 with three RBI, a triple, a double and two runs for the Bluedevils. Fort Lupton was unable to record a hit in the second game. The Bluedevils fell to 3-3 overall, 1-1 in 4A/3A Colorado League play.

Girls Soccer

Windsor 7, Greeley West 0, in Greeley: Windsor remained undefeated at 3-0 in 4A/5A Northern Colorado Athletics Conference play, 3-0 overall. The Wizards jumped out to a commanding 6-0 lead by halftime. Senior Alyssa Serrano and sophomore Sam Darnell had two goals apiece. Five different Windsor players scored goals, including sophomore Emily Hinson, who had one goal and two assists. Freshman Ella Moody had three assists. Junior Xiomena Hernandez had 10 saves for Greeley West. The Spartans fell to 0-3, 0-3.

Boys swimming and diving

Windsor 96, Mountain View 86, in Windsor: Windsor evened its dual record at 1-1, taking first in six of 12 events. Sophomore Nathan Russell had two first-place individual finishes for the Wizards — in the 50-yard freestyle (22.98 seconds) and the 100 freestyle (51.61).

Track and Field

Numerous local teams perform at the Murray Kula Invitational, in Windsor: Niwot took home the girls (198 points) and boys (109) team titles at the Murray Kula Invitational. A series of local programs also made their marks. Host Windsor placed fourth in the girls standings (48.5) and 13th (13) in boys meet. Roosevelt was fifth (63) in boys and sixth (46) in girls. Greeley Central and Severance tied in the girls standings with 20 points each. The Wildcats boys (1) also placed 16th. The Silver Knights didn’t place in the boys standings. Resurrection Christian tied Roosevelt for fifth (63) in the boys standings and was 16th (5) in the girls standings. Greeley West didn’t place in the girls standings but was 15th (5) in the boys standings. Senior Braycen Buxman placed first in the boys 100 (11.20) and in the 200 (21.84) for Resurrection Christian. His time in the 200 was a new meet record. Roosevelt senior Logan Champa won the boys long jump (20′ 10″) and the boys triple jump (41′ 11.5″). Windsor senior Devyn Thornton won the girls triple jump (35′ 11″). Greeley Central senior Heather Yackey placed first in girls discus (122′ 10″).

Platte Valley boys defend home track at Platte Valley Invitational, in Kersey: Competing on its home track, Platte Valley’s boys (113.33 points) took home a team title. The Broncos girls (44.5) finished eighth. Liberty Common (137) won the girls title. Eaton was the runner-up in girls (83) and boys (112.33). University was third in girls (80.5) and 11th in boys (26). The Northridge girls (63) placed fourth, while its boys team (49) was seventh. Dayspring was third in boys (77.33) and seventh in girls (53.5). Briggsdale’s girls and Pawnee’s boys were 13th, with one team point apiece. The host Broncos had four first-place finishes: Devyn Lauer (10.92, boys 100; 22.54, 200), Kyle Horn (17.32, boys 110 hurdles) and its boys 400 relay team (43.87). University had a pair of first-place finishes: Kylie Kravig (2.30.25, girls 800) and its girls 800 relay team (1:55.68). Eaton had seven first-place finishes: Andie Rasmussen (5:28.47, girls 1,600; 12:21.68, 3,200), Catelyn Adams (17.15, girls 100 hurdles), Allyson Weichel (45.98, girls 300 hurdles), Joseph Sisneros (43.67, boys 300 hurdles), its boys 1,600 relay team (3:38.64) and Zac Grable (6′ 1″, boys high jump). Dayspring Christian had three top finishes: its 800 sprint medley team (2:05), Eboselulu Omofoma (4′ 10″, girls high jump) and its boys 800 relay team (1:37.11). Savanna Amack placed first for Northridge in girls triple jump (32′ 10.5″), as did the Grizzlies’ Colton Magnuson in the boys 800 (2:07.58).

Frontier competes at the Lyons Invitational, in Lyons:  Frontier Academy placed ninth (46) out of 16 teams in the boys standings and 16th (16) out of 18 teams in the girls standings at the Lyons Invitational. Erie (90) won the boys title, and Lutheran (102.5) won the boys title. Senior Brayden Savage had a first-place finish for the Wolverines in the boys 100-meter dash (11.02 seconds).

Prairie attends Terry Amundson Invitational, in Byers: Prairie finished fifth (33) out of 15 teams in the boys standings and 15th (8) out of 16 teams in the girls standings at the Terry Amundson Invitational. Byers took the girls title (132), and Limon claimed the boys title (138). Senior Erik Lebsock gave Prairie an individual champion in the boys discus (124′ 9″).

Valley 11, Platte Valley 1, in Kersey: Valley scored in all but one inning, improving to 3-4 overall, 3-4 in 3A Patriot League play. Senior Servando Perez hit 3 for 3 with three RBI and two runs for the Vikings. Junior Zach Miles went 2 for 3 with two runs. The senior pitching duo of starter Brandon Blanco and reliever Ty Stotts combined to allow just one earned run on three hits, striking out four and walking two. Platte Valley dropped to 1-4, 1-4. Junior Dade Gomez hit 1 for 3 and drove in the Broncos’ only run.

Byers 10, Briggsdale 0, in Grover: Briggsdale fell behind 6-0 early after giving up five runs in the top of the second inning. Sophomore Brianna Blickem had the Falcons’ only hit, going 1 for 2. Briggsdale fell to 0-5 with the nonleague loss.

Girls soccer

Dawson School 12, Fort Lupton 0, in Lafayette: Fort Lupton was unable to get going against the top-ranked team in 2A, according to CHSAANow.com. The Mustangs scored all 12 of their goals in the first half. The Bluedevils fell to 1-3 with the nonleague loss.
