Prince Philip funeral: Prince Harry sits alone in chapel

Princess Anne’s son was called on to walk between the brothers behind the Duke of Edinburgh’s coffin on the way to St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle on Saturday. Sources told The Mail on Sunday the Duke of Sussex had experienced « a great deal of frostiness » after he touched down in the UK on Monday weeks after his interview with Oprah sent shockwaves through the Firm. One source suggested some members of the family harboured « resentment » towards Harry and had « a deep sense of protection towards the Queen ».

The insider added: « There is little sympathy for him after what he and Meghan said on Oprah.

« They are still very upset. They are putting on a united front for the Queen. They all think he has behaved appallingly. »

According to another report, the Duke of Cambridge requested that Peter stand between him and Harry during the funeral cortege.

Meanwhile Prince Charles appears to be keen to mend his bond with Prince Harry during the brief window of opportunity while his son is in the UK royal aides have drawn up plans to confront his son and to privately « walk around Windsor ».

But the Duke of Sussex is said to be keen to return to the US as soon as he can to be reunited with his pregnant wife Meghan and their son Archie.

If Harry, 36, goes along with the plan to meet with his father in the wake of the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral it would be a major step towards healing their rift.

The father and son were pictured at the sombre occasion yesterday less than six weeks after Harry revealed to the world that Charles stopped taking his calls after he announced his departure from the Firm.

In his interview with Oprah Winfrey Harry also said it « hurt » him that his father and other close family members had failed to condemn racist abuse of his wife.

A royal source suggested time has been allotted into the Prince of Wales’ diary to allow him to spend quality time with his younger son before he jets back across the pond.

The source told the MailOnline: « There has been talk that Charles will walk around Windsor with Harry to look at some of the tributes and spend some time together. »

Harry touched down in the UK on Monday and is believed to have spent the week isolating at Frogmore Cottage.

He broke his 10-day quarantine to attend the funeral at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, nearly three years after the duke and the Queen watched him tie the knot with Meghan in the same venue.

While Government rules stipulate that overseas arrivals may attend funerals, Harry must continue his self-isolation at « all other times ».

Harry is believed to have returned to Frogmore Cottage after the funeral where he will remain over the coming days.

On Saturday Harry was pictured chatting to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, making it the clearest sign yet that the frosty relationship between the brothers is thawing.

3:30am update: Prince William and Prince Charles to hold summit on Royal Family future after Megxit

Prince William and Prince Charles will hold a summit on the future of the Royal Family for the next two generations.

Royal insiders say William, Charles and Her Majesty will discuss over the coming weeks how the monarchy should evolve.

The discussions would centre on whether the Royal Family should carry on with its traditional model of thousands of engagements a year.

Suggested alternatives are believed to be whether to spread out between a broad base of full-time and part-time working royals, or cut down the number of engagements and patronages and use fewer members of the family to fulfil them.

A source said: “The question is whether you start off by deciding how many patronages and engagements there should be, and then work out how many people are needed to achieve them, or whether you decide how many people there should be, which will dictate how many engagements and patronages they can take on.”

2am update: Queen sitting alone at funeral epitomised British Covid struggle ‘She is a class act!’

The Queen epitomised Britain’s struggle with grief, trauma and isolation during the Covid crisis, according to a commentator.

Australian commentator Kathy Lette praised the ceremony for Prince Philip’s funeral on Saturday.

While speaking on 9News Australia she reflected on the image of the Queen sitting alone during Prince Philp’s funeral service.

Ms Lette said: « The other thing to mention is the reason this funeral has so resonated with the British public.

« Unlike Australia who has been so blessed to pull the draw bridge up and be Covid-free whereas in Britain around 127,000 people have died.

« We have been in a state of loss, grief, bereavement and trauma for so long.

« Seeing the Queen sitting there, going through this ordeal alone when so many people have had to go to Zoom funerals, not funerals.

« The Queen kind of epitomised what Britain has been through.”

Prince William will stand up for Britain and the monarchy and not allow Prince Harry to insult the crown, a royal expert has claimed.

Royal expert Lady Colin Campbell reflected on the reunion between Prince William and Prince Harry.

While speaking on TalkRadio she insisted Prince William is not going to give Prince Harry a « free pass » while he is in the UK.

While the brothers were seen talking at the funeral on Saturday, Prince William will still do his duty for the crown and the monarchy and not allow his brother to attack the institution, she said.

Lady Colin said: « I think it sends a message that Prince William will not be mucked around.

« He will not allow sentiments to divert him from his duty to the British people and to the British crown.

« He is not giving Harry a free pass just because they are sharing a family sadness.”

11:32pm update: Prince William and Prince Harry urged to ‘fix things’ after feud: ‘Charles upset!’

Prince William and his brother Prince Harry were urged to settle their differences as a royal expert said the Duke of Sussex had acted out of character.

Following the service, Harry and William were seen chatting to each other for the first time since the bombshell Oprah Winfrey interview.

Royal biographer Robert Jobson urged the two brothers to mend their relations because Prince Charles would surely be « upset ».

He continued: “We all fall out with our siblings [now and] again, but to continue into a feud is a little, unlike Harry, actually.

“The character that I knew, he was quite relaxed, actually. And I think he wouldn’t have wanted to continue this. So, I don’t understand what the problem is.”

The star revealed that the Duke of Edinburgh, who died peacefully at the age of 99 at Windsor Castle, was less than impressed with his former role as a Britain’s Got Talent judge.

The former Good Morning Britain presenter reflected on the memorable evening in his latest column.

He wrote about how BGT champ Paul “nearly self-combusted with joy and pride » when the Queen told him: « You were very good. »

5.12pm update: Prince Philip’s funeral saw fitting tribute to his ‘special relationship’ with Falklands

Prince Philip’s funeral included a fitting tribute that showed his « special relationship » with the Falkland Islands.

The Queen’s husband of 73 years spent almost 14 years in the Royal Navy and saw action in the Mediterranean Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Pacific during World War 2.

Philip’s links with the armed services were epitomised by his pallbearers – members of the military specially selected from the Duke’s long career.

Among those fulfilling the role was the the son of a Falklands war hero – Major General Rupert Jones, Colonel Commandant of The Rifles.

Mr Jones, 51, is the youngest son of Lieutenant Colonel Herbert « H » Jones, a paratrooper who was awarded the Victoria Cross by the Queen for his « devastating display of courage » at the Battle of Goose Green during the Falklands War in 1982.

2.28pm update: Kate Middleton ‘did not isolate’ Prince Harry after Oprah interview

Prince Harry had « good fortune » when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge chose not to « isolate him » at Prince Philip’s funeral according to a top royal expert.

During Saturday’s funeral for the Duke of Edinburgh William and Harry were seen walking together after leaving the service.

It comes just six weeks after the Duke and Duchess of Sussexes’ incendiary interview with Oprah Winfrey in which they accused Royal Family members of racism.

Writing for The Sun Tom Bower, who wrote a biography about Prince Charles, argued it’s too early to say whether the funeral marks the start of a more permanent reconciliation.

Referring to Harry he said: “To his good fortune, William and Kate did not isolate him despite the trashing he meted out on his family on US TV just six weeks ago.

“Only the coming days will reveal whether Harry is prepared to show honest remorse.

“Undoubtedly, the sight of the Queen’s suffering during an emotional service for their beloved grandfather will have drawn the brothers and Kate together in the minutes after a draining spectacle. »

12.25pm update: Queen ‘couldn’t face going into church alone’ and sought reassurance from Camilla and Kate

The Queen looked like she « couldn’t face going to the funeral alone » and sought reassurance from her wider family, a body language expert has said.

The monarch, 94, arrived in the state Bentley outside St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle alongside a lady-in-waiting to say a final farewell to the Duke of Edinburgh.

She was greeted by the Dean of Windsor as her close aide stepped out of view before walking towards the door of the church.

Body language expert Judi James pointed out the brief moment when Her Majesty turned to look back towards the funeral procession as if for reassurance.

She suggested this might have been because the Queen was daunted by having to head into the chapel alone.

Ms James told Mail Online: « There was one moment when she paused and turned around before entering the chapel and it looked terribly poignant, almost as though she couldn’t face going in alone.

12.02pm update: Channel 4 news fury as Matt Frei debates end of monarchy in front of Windsor mourners

Channel 4 presenter Matt Frei has been branded a « prat » for discussing whether the monarchy should be abolished while standing outside Windsor Castle near devastated royalists who had gathered to mourn Prince Philip on the day of his funeral.

The gaffe-prone presenter mused with ardent Republican Kimberly McIntosh about what should happen to the UK’s head of state after the Queen dies live on air from Windsor Castle.

Just hours earlier a visibly distraught Queen had buried her husband of 73 years in a heartbreaking ceremony attended by other close royals including Prince Harry.

Rather than giving the country’s longest-serving monarch time to grieve her childhood sweetheart, Mr Frei used it as an opportunity to muse on what should happen once the 94-year-old is dead.

He asked Ms McIntosh to assume that the UK became a republic.

The former BBC presenter said: “Imagine if the monarchy didn’t exist.

“Imagine if it were to be abolished. Which some people in this country want – perhaps you as well – what should replace it? »

« The Greeks sent two wreaths of olives. My favourite was the wreath of daisies sent by Queen Margrethe of Denmark, known as Daisy since childhood, we’re told.

« King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands sent a wreath, as did the former Queen, Princess Beatrix.

« There were also wreaths from the royal families of Norway, Sweden, and Luxembourg that I saw, possibly more. »

10.43am update: Touching moment Peter Phillips ‘stood back’ to allow William and Harry to reunite

Peter Phillips stood back to allow his cousins, Prince William and Prince Harry, to reunite at Prince Philip’s funeral amid an ongoing rift between the two royal siblings.

The Duke of Edinburgh was buried yesterday at Windsor Castle but due to coronavirus restrictions, only 30 people were allowed to attend.

The funeral of their grandfather will be the first time the brothers have seen each other face-to-face since the Commonwealth Service in March last year.

But according to a royal expert, it was a « touching gesture » from Peter Phillips who allowed the two brothers to speak.

Vanity Fair’s royal correspondent Katie Nicholl claimed Peter walked slightly ahead at certain points in the procession and he was seen to have « stood back ».

She told the BBC: « I noticed Peter Phillips, I know they were walking as a trio, but the way he just stood back. »

8.04am update: Prince Philip fulfilled ‘rare and priceless’ royal role for Queen – constitutional expert

Prince Philip fulfilled his « constitutional duties » to the Queen and monarchy through « two formal roles », according to a royal expert.

Philip and the Queen « lived separate constitutional lives », according to an expert.

UCL professor Bob Morris spoke to Express.co.uk about the Duke of Edinburgh’s formal role as consort and what is provided for the monarch.

He also discussed the royal’s legacy in the wake of his death.

Mr Morris told Express.co.uk: « The consort does have some constitutional duties. The first one is that if his wife fell ill to the extent that she could no longer continue her duties and his son was under the age of 18, then he would have been the regent.

« But, of course, that was time limited by the age of Charles and so on.

« Secondly he was one of the councillors of state when the Queen was absent or temporarily ill. »

As the hearse approached, cameras caught the Countess comforting her young son by placing her hand on his back.

The young viscount was the youngest attendee of the funeral at just 13 years old and is the youngest of the Duke’s grandchildren.
